Dog howling at our dark garden?
I don’t want to sound superstitious or anything, but I was cooking earlier and my dog started barking at the window facing our garden. It’s nighttime so the garden was dark. I didn’t mind him at first, because I thought he was just seeing a cat or something outside. Then he started howling. My dog is a nice, quiet, golden retriever, who never howls. This is the first time I’ve heard him howl (he’s only 1 year old). He kept on howling and growling, facing our garden, so I went to him and peered outside. I didn’t see anything, so I turned on the lights and opened the door so my dog could go out (in case he wanted to pee or something). My dog just poked his head out the door, seemingly cautious, and then backed in, without going out. With the lights on, he stopped barking, howling and growling altogether. I shrugged and locked the doors, turned off the lights again, and went back to the kitchen. He started growling and barking once more. I got scared at this point so called him to me, and closed the door so he would stop looking out the window.
I’m curious if he saw a spirit or a ghost or anything, or if this behavior is just normal to dogs.

He most likely saw a ghost.

Well, dogs do like to bark at ghosts. More than likely, he saw a small animal such as a rabbit or even a snake (snakes tend to move about more at night).

Dogs can see lots of things that we can’t, but it’s not necessarily a ghost, like small rodents that blend in with the background, small birds, etc. especially when it’s dark. However, if he started backing up when you opened the door instead of chasing after it, then maybe it was something else, something he was afraid of…like a ghost, a spirit, an alien, a zombie, a leprechaun, a vampire, a werewolf…kidding. That would freak me out, too. Just think that you were visited by a passing spirit from your past to check in on you to say hello.
