How do you anchor something into a stucco covered Styrofoam wall?
I have a fairly heavy transformer for a set of low-voltage lights. On the back of this transformer is a ‘catch’ to hold onto a nail or some such item protruding from a wall. My problem is that the exterior walls of this house is stucco-covered Styrofoam. This is a common type of wall in new construction in the Southwest.
My problem is that I have tried in the past to anchor a flagpole with screws into the wall, and it just pulls out chunks of the stucco, leaving a bad mess.
So, how does one anchor something into just such a wall?

Considering most residential construction spaces wall studs 16 inches on center, I would start at one end of the wall and mark off the first 3/4 inch and then measure every 16 inches. This way you will be fairly certain that your screw or nail will find a solid piece of wood.

I am not familiar with that building technique, but I imagine the Styrofoam will need to be attached to some type of framing.
If you can find them you will be able to attach something to two of them, to attach your transformer.

If you go with these peoples questions it may work for a minute… until the first wind storm. My idea is still the best.

You need longer screws. Your EIFS may be as much as 3" thick. Use a 1/4" drill bit, and run it in until you hit something solid. Then you can screw into it. Good luck.
