actually a ceramic heat emmitor is the best. ball pythons are nocturnal and constant light can actually stress them. how large of one you would need will be determined by your cage setup. If you have a screen lid you will need a higher wattage emmitor than if you had a glass lid that will hold in heat better(but reduces air circulation). you may have to experiment with a couple different wattages until you find the one that works best for you.

Ball pythons really do best with "belly heat" such as Under Tank Heaters (http://www.petco.com/product/6353/Zoo-Med-Repti-Therm-UTH-Under-Tank-Heaters.aspx)
If nothing else a ceramic heat emitter (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752658&utm_medium=googleproduct&mr:referralID=NA&mr:trackingCode=8C7D95AD-AAF9-DC11-AA92-001422107090&utm_source=cse) will work, but be wary that they tend to leach the humidity right out at an alarming rate.
The LAST thing you want to do is use anything but a specially designed reptile light (without uva/uvb – they don’t need it) to keep them warm. Regular light bulbs will stress them greatly

try a 75w bulb for reptiles… remember the temperature of the enclosure shoul be from 85 degrees to 92 degrees
