Did they change the light bulb laws in the US or just Canada ?

The old light bulbs — which were round and used 60 to 100 watts are being phased out in Canada –(I forget which year they will no longer be available for purchase)

As a result the old light bulbs are on sale everywhere

Ontario Hydro , top scientist David Suzuki and so on are advocating for the new energy efficient light bulbs

Suzuki has been putting the message into a Canadian format and spreading it

"Less electricity equals more beer"

The say you can save about 45 dollars a year per light bulb — so I thought make that 36 dollars a year or 3 dollar a month times 10 light bulbs –30 dollars a month or 360 per year

I have been buying them with the idea that I will save money on my next hydro bill ( more money for beer) and that I am doing something good to reduce power consumption

———– Here is the only draw back to using them I have found — there can be up to a 5 second delay when turning them on to lighting the room — other than that it appears brighter than the regular bulbs for slightly less than 1/4 of the electricity 13 watts compared to 60

Has any of this all of this or some of this het the US yet ?

I like Sukuki’s message better – but the above link is far more informative

How do I keep rabbits from chewing electrical cords on my garden lights?

I have a beautiful fountain that sits in a 3′ open area, cornered by a side walk on one side, the house (brick) on one side, and the backside of the shurbs on the other 2 sides. Bunnies have chewed the cords between the lights. I want to shine the lights up, and onto the fountain at night. The fountain is surrounded by about 2 feet of gravel – up to the shrubs. The solar panel is about 10 feet away and I have it "hidden" off the ground on top of the shrubs where you can’t see it, so it’s okay, but the cords that connect the 3 lights together that are 6-8" off the ground are short. I tried putting plastic tubing around them, but even hiding most of the tubing under the shrubs (the lights are around the area on the backside of the shrubs) isn’t very attractive. The cords themselves are so tiny and can be easily hidden, but the plastic tubing is so obvious & icky.

I’ve heard about human hair, but what about dog hair? I just gave the dog a cut & have tons of it!

I have a sprinkler system, so liquid repellents get washed away Hair on the gravel is going to look gross, and besides, the part they’ve chewed is about 4 inches above the ground. There are too many cords to use moth balls and a fence would look hideous next to the sidewalk.

Suggestions?

Light bulb problem (Power, Reistance Voltage…etc..)

A 3-way light bulb has 3 brightness settings (low, medium, & high), but only 2 filaments.
a.) a particular 3-way lightbulb connected across a 120-V line can dissipate 60W, 120W, or 180 W. Describe how the two filaments are arranged in the bulb, and calculate the resistance of each filament.
b.) suppose the filament w/ the higher resistance burns out. How much power will the light bulb dissipate on each of the 3 brightness settings? What will be the brightbess (l,m,h) on each setting?
c.) Repeat part b for the situation where it is the filament w/ the lover resistance that burns out.

What is the sequence when remodeling a kitchen?

My kitchen is 25 years old. If I can only replace one thing per month, should I begin with an energy star refrigerator? Do you replace the floor before or after the refrigerator? Would the dishwasher be the next appliance in order of energy savings? Or the lighting? And then the stove? Would the cabinet work be done before or after the lighting? Should I prioritize aquiring an energy efficient washer & dryer? My intent is to save energy and improve safety (the stove) and have peace of mind about the appearance of the kitchen.
Thank you all for your answers. Earthwoman, thanks for mentioning possible wiring upgrade and drain replacement. Since this will be a LOW budget project, I like the idea of asking the store to help with a plan, too. Each of you have helped me.

I have 2 sensor lights at the front of my house, since a storm the other night they remained…?

…on & won’t go off.
My outdoor sensor lights at the front normally go on & off at movement but after a storm the other night, they came on during the night & have been on for the past 2 days. I have looked at the circuit box but I can’t see one for the sensor lights. Is there anything I can do it appears the sensor is stuck & won’t go off properly.

garage door interference and more?

We’ve had several issues…they may be unrelated, but I’m doubting it so I’m listing them all.

Our lights downstairs used to go in and out (now only one of 8 comes on and it’s not bad bulbs – it’s been suggested the ballasts are bad). We had AT&T U-verse TV for several months with no issues and for the past 5 months we’ve had nothing but trouble…having to reset our modem and all systems repeating resulting in 6 in-home services visits.

Our wireless network is dropping in and out and is very unreliable. The two hard-wired to the internet have no issues, but anything on wireless is very up and down.

Now our garage door opener only works using the remotes to open the door. The remotes will not open the door at all (neither will our outside keypad) and the pad by our door will not work to close it unless we hold it down until the door is completely closed. There is nothing obbstructing the door’s path.

Also, recently, anytime we try to use electrical outlets outside they work only for a few moments and then the reset buttons kick off. This has never been an issue before using the exact same equipment.

Our landscaping lights are not working outside now either.

What could be causing this? Is this electrical? Should we be contacting an electrician? I just don’t know where to begin!

An AT&T rep told me our compact fluorescent bulbs could be causing the problems. Could this really be when we’ve had those lights for more than two years and are only recently experiencing these issues?

What are some ways to merge indoor & outdoor living?

When the weather is nice I love to be outside, but when I’m inside I’ll open every window in the house. I’d like to cook outside more, especially at night. Of course, rodents might show up & bugs are attracted to light so that’s a downside. I guess I’m imaging a kitchen or home that is open to the outdoors but still protected from rain, strong winds, cold temperatures, & annoying critters.

How can I detect voltage across two speaker wires?

I pre-wired (during construction) two runs from my amp to the distant satellites. The speakers themselves have been tested on the front two channels and they work. I suspect there is no current through the distant wiring, as perhaps a mouse or squirrel ate thru the wiring. I tried an outlet circuit tester (it lights up when you put a lead in each side of a wall outlet or one side and the ground) but when I tried one lead held on each leg of a speaker connection….nothing! Is the speaker voltage too small to light the tester? Do I need to buy a cheapo Chinese VOM and set the scale on a real low value???

Not sure, but I want to test other speaker runs as well, so I need a goof proof way to check across two wire legs at a given location. Thanks!
Thanks for the meter ideas BUT! If I disconnect from the AMP, then there would be no source signal at all! How can I just cross the wires then and get a continuity test??? The amp delivers the signal thru the speaker wires as the speaker itself merely "acts" as an 8 ohm resistor inline, producing sound pressure. For continuity, it seems I must stay connected! Please clarify!
