I know I just posted this, but I messed my question up. Ignore this if you’ve already read it or answered it.
I recently brought home a well behaved 4 1/2 year old racetrack reject who has been retrained in dressage and light jumping. (Yes, his joints have closed- we made sure of that before we bought him.) He has been very calm, willing, and obedient the entire time we have had him with the exception of two instances:
1.) The other day, we were warming up in the outdoor arena with two other horses. I asked for a trot and moved into two point so I could work on my position. One of the other horses was trotting and the other was walking around near the center of the ring. Out of nowhere, my horse took off galloping. He was not bolting or nervous. I got into a half-seat and tried to slow him down and pull him into a circle. We galloped almost all the way around the ring until he put on the brakes at the third corner. I went over his shoulder and he stopped. The weather was fine and there was nothing to set him off- I wasn’t even carrying a whip. I longed him for ten minutes or so and he was excellent for the rest of the ride.
2.) Today we were working over low jumps, crossrails, and ground poles. The highest fence was a PVC wall about 21" high and weworked over the course at the trot and canter. He was doing just fine-relaxed and in tune with my aids. We came to the wall at a brisk trot and jumped it just fine, but upon landing, he took off again. I have no idea why he is doing this. His saddle fits him fine, my position is stable. I couldn’t slow him down and fell off, just like last time. I had longed him beforehand and he was his usual lazy self. It was kind of windy, but he had been relaxed the entire time we were out. I didn’t longe him after I fell off today- I just hopped back on and trotted around on a loose rein until I felt like stopping. Actually, come to think of it, he did pick up a canter yesterday without my asking, but he slowed right down after a few half halts.
I have two questions: Why does he bolt, and how can I stop him without unseating myself?
I’ll post a summary between the instances to make it easier on you guys:
-Every time he has bolted, I have been in two point. We work in two point all the time, but still.
-Two of the times, I have been by myself in the arena, but my parents or instructor have been at the fence.
-One of the times, I was riding with other horses.
-He has not had turn out the past few days, but has been longed and exercised prior to my taking him out.
-He has no history of this.
Will he lose his balance if I crank him into a circle?
Anyone else?
