I pass about 3 township every day for my commute. I have seen Solar panels are been installed on the street light poles in every town that I pass.
Some of the poles do not have any Light Bulbs on the top – but still the panels are installed.
I wonder why the panels are for – Of course the obvious reason to send the light energy from the sun to the grid.

My senior project is going to involve this. I plan to cover the roof in solar panels, and maybe install a windmill, but I need other ideas as far as what I could do right in the yard/back yard (living in suburbs of Missoula, MT with little wind). I know about installing low-flow toilets and sinks or the efficient light bulbs… what else could I do on a smaller budget?
The energy from efficient light bulbs is SAVED!
1. All transportation vehicles must be hybrid.

3. All light bulbs must be fluorescent and citizens may not buy or sell regular light bulbs.
4. No smoking of anything, especially if it causes smoke, is allowed.
5. All electricity must be created by renewable resources, such as solar, wind, tidal, hydroelectric, or geothermal energy.
6. Fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas – uranium and any other nonrenewable resources may never be dug up or used.
7. All parks must be at least 4 square miles large.
8. There must be a minimum of 10 trees at every park.
9. The maximum amount of water used in the bathroom is 50 gallons per person.
10. All faucets and showerheads must be low-flow aerators. All washing machines must also be a water efficient model and all toilets must be high-efficiency toilets.
11. Littering is not allowed anywhere in this city.
12. All recyclable trash must be recycle.
I just need a couple ideas like the one’s I just listed. I need 8 more, but you can list less. if you see something wrong with the one’s that are listed like if they aren’t related to using/wasting energy or conserving energy. Tell me! Thanks!

It seems like not that long ago people used to complain about how spending so much time under fluorescent bulbs weren’t healthy. They tell you that the mercury content is TRACE amounts. But do they tell you how much trace amounts will hurt you? And trace amounts in a powder or vapor like in the bulbs are way worse than much more mercury in a liquid.

Now I don’t know anyone who actually does any of that. So I ask you. Do you still think they are better for the environment because it saves a little energy or worse because its toxic? Keep in mind the effects to the environment when producing, using and disposing of them. Even if its done according to the guidelines.
I dont understand why they are called environmentally friendly.
I am particularly concerned about broken bulbs in my home . I think the first time I broke one I was pregnant. And now with kids and pets. . I wont be using them.
However I am interested in any resources that say one way or another about environmental effects for disposal of the new bulbs vs the effects of making the energy. Cause at this point burning coal vs chance of broken bulbs, disposal, and improper disposal,.. coal seems significantly better.

I debating whether to get a 18" solar tube in my kitchen/dining room that is rated to provide about the equivalent of 10 100watt light bulbs OR getting a 2X4 traditional skylight cut out. Which will provide me more light?
The traditional skylight is about double the solar tubes.
Local power company states if we replace 20 light bulbs with the new coiled energy efficient ones we could save &100/year.
The dang bulbs cost a pop. Lets do the math x20=0
so how am I saving 0?
BTW I purchased some of these bulbs they lasted one week. I cant take them back because who saves the receipt for light bulbs.
