Should I get a UVB light for winter?

I’m trying to boost my temps up in my outdoor tortoises barn. Since its been pretty cold, he doesn’t go outside his tortoise shed.

Should I get a mercury vapor bulb for his shed, or do you think he will be ok without synthetic UVB for the next month or so till its warmer?
Sulcata tortoises do not hibernate and he is a sulcata

Are CFLs really energy efficient?

Few days ago, I read an article that talked about the ill effects of incandescent light bulbs. So, I decided to replace them with CFLs only to discover that they do not work as efficiently as expected. To add to this I also discovered that it contains toxic substances like mercury and if broken should be handled with care. Totally confused!! Someone recommended that I replace CFLs with LEDs. Do you think it’s a better option?

Whats all the hype about energy efficient light bulbs?

It seems like not that long ago people used to complain about how spending so much time under fluorescent bulbs weren’t healthy. They tell you that the mercury content is TRACE amounts. But do they tell you how much trace amounts will hurt you? And trace amounts in a powder or vapor like in the bulbs are way worse than much more mercury in a liquid.

This is how to clean up and dispose of these light bulbs.

http://www.energystar.gov/ia/products/lighting/cfls/downloads/CFL_Cleanup_and_Disposal.pdf

Now I don’t know anyone who actually does any of that. So I ask you. Do you still think they are better for the environment because it saves a little energy or worse because its toxic? Keep in mind the effects to the environment when producing, using and disposing of them. Even if its done according to the guidelines.
I dont understand why they are called environmentally friendly.
I am particularly concerned about broken bulbs in my home . I think the first time I broke one I was pregnant. And now with kids and pets. . I wont be using them.

However I am interested in any resources that say one way or another about environmental effects for disposal of the new bulbs vs the effects of making the energy. Cause at this point burning coal vs chance of broken bulbs, disposal, and improper disposal,.. coal seems significantly better.
Actually its platinum, but hopefully John? Nice.

Would you support the government forcing us to eliminate incandesent lightbulbs?

knowing that the new ones are filled with mercury?? Are the new more energy efficient light bulbs better in the long run when they begin to burn out and we begin dumping mercury into our landfills and eventually into the soil and groundwater? or does the government have some sort of recycling program for them.. Do you believe people would recycle them if they could considering how few people recycle glass and metal now when it is so easy to do

Are you aware of the proper disposable of energy effecient light bulbs?

They contain mercury and there is a specific and "safe" way to dispose of broken bulbs. Wouldn’t you think these bulbs while being ‘energy efficient’ would also be ‘safe,’ not a hazard in case of breakage. Here is a link on proper disposal. Please read the disposal for ‘broken bulbs,’ not just burned out bulbs. Be safe! As for me, I’m not buying these things. I’ll just keep the lights off when not in use, and regular lower wattage bulbs like I do now.

I was unable to come up with a category for this question that I felt was appropriate, so Senior Citizens…you got the question.
The bulbs were being made in the U.S, but it was determined the U.S could by them from China for less, so that is where they are being shipped in from. Makes you wonder.

Is the new energy saving light bulbs safe?

I was send an email about this energy saving light bulbs,

http://youtube.com/watch?v=e-LOtKIIKcg

I watch and read more info about this "energy saving" light bulb that suppose to save our environment yet it has MERCURY,

http://www.nitrf.org/Mercurydangers.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_poisoning

http://www.relfe.com/mercury.html

Even though our government has determine the mercury is dangerous, it is okay to added for our amalgam fillings, and the vaccines, now they have decided that we don’t have enough exposure so they are pushing down our throat, this "energy efficient light bulb that will poison us and the environment

I hope some one can please explain the logic behind this light bulb.

Anyone know of any programs that give grants, state or gov. help for recycling of lights that contain Mercury?

My company is in North County San Diego, CA, we convert old lights in commercial buildings to new energy efficient lights. The recycling is so expensive and you can’t just throw them away. Does any one know of any program, grant, innexpensive place or anything about the recycling of light bulbs that contain mercury? Thanks so much!

Anyone have a reason light bulbs do not last as long as they used to?

Seems like today it is hard to find light bulbs that last for more than a couple of weeks. Used to be light bulbs lasted for months at a time.
This seems more prevalent since the coming of the soft white bulbs and the new mercury filled energy saving bulbs have happened on the market.
I have a really tough time with outside lights such as in my garage and porch lights and flood lights, that take the standard 100W socket bulbs. Is it just me or are others experiencing the same problems?
Even flood light bulbs seem to blow.
So yes I have bitten the bullet and put a couple of .50ea. florecent 18W bulbs in my garage door. We’ll see how they hold up…
