Indoor Grow Lights Help Your Plants Flourish

Indoor Grow Lights Help Your Plants Flourish

All plants, because of their need for photosynthesis, require appropriate light in order to ensure their proper growth and maturation. Indoor gardeners use indoor grow lights to supply the illumination necessary. There are a wide variety of indoor grow lights available, including LED grow lights, HPS grow lights, and even discount grow lights. There are some differences among indoor grow lights, so it pays to do a little research before you invest in them.

HPS Grow Lights

HPS grow lights, referencing high pressure sodium, are a type of HID, or high intensity discharge, light. Although a compact light bulb, they are capable of producing a lot of light, and thus their appeal to indoor gardeners. HPS lights give off light in the red to orange color spectrum, making it the lamp of choice for helping to coax your mature plants to bear fruit or flowers. HPS lamps need to be used in conjunction with a ballast, a piece of equipment that controls the flow of electricity to and through the lamp. The lamps are popular because they last a long time and are efficient to run.

LED Grow Lights

Light-emitting diode, or LED, grow lights are wildly popular among indoor gardening enthusiasts, and for good reason. These indoor grow lights are tiny and thus extremely lightweight, making them easier to use in overhead situations in a greenhouse. They also do not generate heat, thereby needing less in terms of auxiliary equipment to keep the grow room at the appropriate temperature, and do not require ballasts. LED grow lights are very efficient to run, and will save money on electricity when compared with many other types of indoor grow lights. They also provide any color spectrum of light that you might wish to use with your plants.

Why do gardeners need indoor grow lights?

Plants need light for photosynthesis, and thus if you are growing plants indoors, you need to compensate for the lack of sunlight. What you are trying to do is recreate sunlight for your plants, and this is where grow lights come into play. Of course, grow lamps are not as bright as sunlight, so indoor gardeners typically leave the lights turned on the plants for a longer length of time than natural light might occur outdoors. Without appropriate light, plants will quickly die. If you are trying to start new plants from seed, the seedlings will become weak from trying to stretch up and reach what little light there is. Instead, the light should be ample and placed close above the seedlings to ensure sturdy stems and good growth.

Consider the types of plants you want to grow indoors, and where they are in their life cycle, in order to determine which grow lamps will be best suited to your needs.

The conversion of light energy into chemical energy by photosynthesis is…?

A) not possible; plants derive their energy from metabolism of soil nutrients.
B) one of the most efficient processes of nature, often approaching a 100% level of energy conversion.
C) accomplished by formation of a hydrogen bond, joining oxygen and hydrogen together to form water.
D) relatively inefficient, with less than a 10% level of energy conversion.
E) moderately efficient; about half of the light energy is converted to chemical energy.

Care giver's unthinking negligence resulted in pedigree dog drowning; can we sue?

The night before our planned trip to the American Maltese Association National dog show, we left our pedigree 6 pound Maltese, Alfie, with a friend who promised to look after him. On the way to the airport the next morning, at 9:20, I called to see how Alfie was doing. The man said that, although he’d been up for hours he hadn’t seen Alfie. About 15 minutes later, as we were pulling into the airport, this man called back to tell us that Alfie had drowned in his pool. We pulled out of the airport and drove immediately to his home where we learned he had left the pet door open, but allowed the outdoor lights to go out, over night. The pool is only a few feet from the pet door and Alfie had only been there twice before. We not only lost our precious Alfie but the non-refundable plane tickets and other non-refundable items we’d paid for. We couldn’t possibly have gone to the show knowing Alfie was dead. The trip cancellation insurance we bought won’t cover this; can we collect from the neglectful caregiver?

The friend who was to care for Alfie never said he was sorry. He didn’t even do as my husband asked: to wrap my 6-pound Alfie in a towel and dry him off. When we got there I nearly passed out to see his lifeless little body all stiff and sopping wet at the side of the pool, which had overgrown plants blocking some parts of the cool deck around the pool. I used my own towel to wrap and dry Alfie. I was sick to my stomach, cried for days, couldn’t eat or sleep: I kept picturing Alfie struggling to get out of the pool.

The wife, who was in Scotland, didn’t call for several days and then didn’t call for a few weeks after she got home. She claims it was an accident, and it was in the same way a car accident or the current oil spill in the Gulf is an accident. I do believe they are liable.

I would appreciate an outsiders look at this sad situation.

Revolutionary Way To Grow Plants By Using Led Grow Lights

Revolutionary Way To Grow Plants By Using Led Grow Lights

A light emitting diode better known as LED is a semiconductor light. These devices are used for lighting. These LEDs have many advantages such as low consumption of energy, small size, long life, immense durability, and dependability.

The advancement of science has permitted the production of cheap bright LED Grow Lights, which emit the wavelength of light similar to chlorophyll absorption limit. These are also called LED growing lights which are helpful for indoor plant growers. The indoor LED grow lights come in four different LED types to strike all four chlorophyll peaks.

These LED grow Lights are very helpful for gardening indoors, plant propagation, and for the production of food. These LED plant lights are helpful in many ways including:

*Lowering the cost: The LED grow light help in saving money compared to the ordinary bulb as it uses only six watt or nine watts of energy.

*Longer self-life: The expected self-life LED grow lights are twelve to eighteen years.

*Less wastage of heat: Even after hours of operation such lights are just warm to touch.

*Light weight: The LED flowering grow lights weigh less than a pound.

These LED planting grow lights are less fragile and pose fewer hazards to the environment.

If you want to have an indoor garden even when living in a place like Alaska or any extremity during the winter months, you can now have your dream garden blooming with the help of these LED grow Lights. You can also grow pepper, tomatoes, basils, roses, and plenty of other food producing plants all over the year.

Three Spectrums Of Light Which Can Be Used To Grow Plants:

These LED grow lights are available in blue, red, and a combination of blue and red, which can be used according to the growth cycle of the plant.

*Blue light: It is used for young seedlings and vegetables.
*Red light: It is used for leafy plants.
*Dual light: It can be used for mid-cycle plants.

These lights are a very good alternate when wanting to grow plants indoor without any botheration. They help a cold winter day to glow by growing plants inside. Such lights keep turning on and off everyday imitating as day and night. That is why they are also called as the intelligent LED lights.

Important Things To Keep In Mind When Buying LED Grow Lights:

Never be attracted to products which are cheap or where the quality of the product is compromised.

solar and/or wind power for plant lights in Boston?

I have a lot of plants in one room of my apartment, and I want to get some more. I have 17 full-spectrum lightbulbs that equal 40 or 60 watt light of typical bulbs while using 13 or 17 watts of power (they have the spiral shape, I can’t think of the name). I would like to replace these lamps with a string of 25. Is there any way to get a solar or wind generator that would charge a battery to run these lights 12-14 hours per day? I am on a hill, so there is plenty of sun in summer, and a good amount of wind year-round.

Thanks!

is it hard to grow leeks and onions in pots for transplanting into the garden?

I have purchased small leek plants for transplant into the garden before, but never grown my own from seed. I can’t direct seen onions or leeks in the garden, because my growing season is very short (northern Minnesota). So I want to grow onions and leeks in trays and transplant them. Is it hard to start them from seed? How long do I need to grow them for them to be big enough? will they be reasonably tough when I transplant them, after hardening off, like the purchased plants are? (the purchased leek transplants are grown outdoors in the southern US, so I think they could be tougher, dunno).

I have a good setup with fluorescent shop lights and a rack, covered with plastic, so it’s about 75 degrees fareignheit in there. I grow my own tomatoes, peppers, flowers etc. from seed so am pretty experienced. I want to start the onions and leeks in aluminum cake pans with holes punched in the bottom, like I do my peppers and tomatoes.

thx!!

Am I overwatering or underwatering my herbs?

I recently started an herb garden on my kitchen windowsill. The plants get full mid-late morning light.
When I purchased my plants, they came in two different containers: some were in square containers and were nice and damp. The rest were in round containers and were very dry.

When I planted everything I gave it a good watering, focusing on those plants from the round containers. And they looked better for awhile, while I kept a watering schedule of appr. every three days. But then the plants from the round containers started to droop. The leaves and stems closest to the base of the plant began to yellow and shrivel up. The rest of the stems are laying down limp, like spaghetti. The plants from the square containers all looked great.

I checked the soil and it was cool and slightly moist. I figured I was overwatering and started watering about every five days, but the plants have not gotten any better. So what do you think, are they getting too much water and are just so abused it is taking awhile for them to recover or are they dying of thirst? My outdoor herb garden was a huge success, so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong this time!
