Solar Lighting Ideas for the Garden – Just like Mom leaving on the Porch Lights

Solar energy to power your outdoor lighting is not only economical, it is also ecologically smart. Outdoor solar lights use sunlight to charge the batteries which power the solar lights. Solar lights may be programmed to automatically go on at dusk and can stay alight for up to 10 hours or more, plenty of time to make it through the night.

Solar Lighting gives A Romantic Glow

Solar outdoor lights are excellent for the yard and deck, resembling a romantic soft glow in the garden, deck or along the entrance path. Garden lighting effectively adds a warm touch of home, even before entering the house. Individual accent lights showcase interesting elements in the yard. Spotlights can make a plain tree look spectacular at night, which may just increase your property value as well.

Solar Lighting in the Garden – A Practical Choice

The solar receptor panels generally last about 20 years with proper care. Solar garden lighting helps illuminate dark paths, or highlight certain landscape elements. There are solar lights that can be installed onto the house or poles, so that it is not so easy for thieves or vandals to walk away with the fixtures.

Solar Garden Lighting Scares Burglars and helps to Prevent Accidents

Solar lighting may also help to scare away intruders, by giving the feeling of “someone is at home”. In fact, there may be models that can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times in the evening, just like you may now be using light timers inside the house to give the impression that someone is at home turning the lights off and on at certain hours of the night. Additionally, movement detectors on solar lights are extremely effective in deterring unwanted guests, and just as effective at welcoming an expected guest. Do you remember the feeling you felt as you approached the front door of a friend’s house as the front poor light went on as you approached the stoop? You may have had an alarmed feeling, or felt happy that the area became lighted, aiding you in finding the steps , avoiding cracks in the walk, or the garden hose reel that may have accidentally been left lying across the entry path!

Solar Lighting and Caring for your Garden

During the Fall and Spring, when you are arriving home in the early evening, many times it is just getting dark, or is already dark. With the energy-saving solar lighting you have installed, you can comfortably see your garden and be able to water the garden. Evening hours is a perfect time to water, as evaporation is not a problem, as it is in the hotter daytime hours.

Outdoor solar lighting creates a welcoming ambience of warmth and safety. That could be why Mom always left the light on for you.

Is there a company that makes a custom Christmas village house?

In 2003 my parents did a major renovation to their home – new siding, a wrap-around porch, landscaping, etc.

My father passed away that December, and never got to see the completed product.

This year, for Christmas for my mom, I’d like to find someone who could take pictures of the house (I would provide) and create a ceramic Christmas village house (the kind that has the light inside). I could provide measurements and all, but I can’t seem to find anyone who can do this (and I’d be surprised if SOMEONE wasn’t doing this out there in the world).

My mom has several of these houses that she puts up every Christmas, and it would be great to have one that looked just like the house.

Obviously cost is an issue, but I know a custom piece won’t be inexpensive. I really just want to find a company or individual who can do this.

Please, serious responses only.

Thanks for your help!
Please don’t say "Yes look on ebay." Be specific.

What's wrong with my cat?

Starting yesterday my black cat, outdoor, started acting somewhat lethargic and wouldn’t eat/drink which is uncommon considering he always seems to have an appetite. Today I found him lying on the porch in front of the door, with labored breathing and emitting long/mournful sounding meows. I brought him inside to the garage, their second home when it’s raining or too cold outside, and he walked to his bed to lie down. Since then he has moved to another location that requires about a 1′ jump, still lying down, still taking short/deep breaths through his nose with some snorting noises occasionally, mouth has stayed close with tongue hanging out a bit and surrounded by a clear/ooze-like substance. He lets out a loud meow whenever someone touches him in his stomach area, his pupils are not reacting very much at all to light. There are no signs of any exterior injuries, I checked him after thinking this may have been the result of a copperhead bite but found no rashes/swelling/bite marks/etc. He has no discharge or any sort of irritation/irregularities around his nose or eyes. He still hasn’t attempted to eat/drink anything, just lays there breathing weird and only lifts his head/opens his eyes for a short time every once in a while and is very sluggish about it. Called the vet and they claim to have no openings, going to try taking him in tomorrow whether they like it or not. Until then, what could this be?
I don’t need to be told over and over "OMG TAKE HIM TO A VET NOW!" He’s being taken to the vet as soon as they open tomorrow, and that’s banking on the hope they even take him in due to their schedule being packed. I’m simply just wanting to know what may be wrong with him, and what to possibly expect out of this.
Also, there’s no 24-hour Vet clinics within a 45-60 minute drive that I’m aware of, maybe even further than that. They do have on-call emergency vets around here but they will only respond to big-breed stuff, such as horses / livestock. I’m in a no-name town in the midwest, so I don’t have many options other than waiting for the local vet to take the case when they open tomorrow.

Apartment herb garden – indoor or porch?

I want to start a small container herb garden (basil, chives, oregano, cilantro & mint); I do have a porch but neither it nor my kitchen window get direct sunlight (they face North), though they do get plenty of indirect light.

Would it make a difference whether I choose to keep them on the windowsill or the porch?

Also, any hints/tips on growing herbs in containers? I live in Los Angeles, so snow is not a problem if I choose to grow on the porch, hehe.

Thanks!

25 lb bag of garden soil tainted with Gasoline…..? Still Good?

I was digging up some of my plants to bring in for the winter….

Was going to keep them under a light…..

but, when I opened the bag, I noticed that it wreaked of gasoline…

((we had a generator on the porch and a kid we knew tried to drain it while we were gone…. Needless to say it spilled out….. and the garden soil soaked it up))…….

The soil looks useable….. But, I’m almost afraid to use it….

What do you think?….

Should I use it?……

How can I decorate for Christmas when I don't have any outdoor outlets?

I would like to decorate for Christmas outside but I don’t have any electrical outlets outside to put up lights and things like that. Do you have any ideas on other ways that I could make my place look festive? I do have some bushes and a porch that I could spruce up, but without lights I need different ideas. Thanks!
I live in an apartment and we don’t have a garage.
I don’t particularly want to leave my window cracked open since I do have an electric bill to pay and it gets pretty chilly and windy here.

How do I change a GFI outlet?

I have a GFI in my garage. It powers itself obviously as well as two outdoor plugs, a switch fior my attic light, and three outdoor lights (porch & coach lights). I need to change the GFI but it is not on any breaker in my breaker box. How do I change that GFI if I cannot shut off the power to it?
