Simple painting questions?

I am going to repaint my bathroom walls and I have the following questions please:

1. The walls are currently a darker color peach. I want to replace it with a light colored yellow. Do I have to primer first? Or perhaps find paint with primer mixed in?

2. I do not like the little string-like patterns from brushes, does using a foam brush eliminate that?

3. How do I know if I need to add a second coat? When I watch home improvement shows, they always say "it needs another coat" but I have no idea how they determine that.

4. I have painted in the past and when the sunlight hits the wall you can see all of my brush strokes. Is there a way to minimize that or just tough luck?

5. Since this is for a bathroom moisture will be present. Do i need to use an outdoor paint, or will a semigloss be just fine? Thanks :)

How should a person wear a hat during a photo shoot?

Obviously, hats cover the light on the face, but if the hat is important enough for the picture, what should be done about lighting the face? Indoor? Outdoor (assuming with a cap, should the face be in the shade or in direct sunlight?)

Appropriate plastic thickness for outdoor covering?

If I wanted a light cover for something outside, what type of thickness of plastic sheeting would be good to have? It probably will not have to deal with weather, because it will be brought inside before rain, and it will not get wet. It will however be out in sunlight frequently. Is 4.5mil thick enough? Also, is black or clear better? is one more durable, does one deal better with the sun? is one cheaper? Thanks in advance.

How does polarization support the wave theory of light?

Also, what type of polarizing lenses would be the most effective at minimizing the glare off of outdoor surfaces exposed to sunlight?

Plants in a low-light New York garden?

I have a small outdoor garden, which gets MAYBE 30 minutes of direct sunlight a day. In addition, it’s in Manhattan, so weather can get VERY cold during winter.
Was wondering if there’s any tree — preferably fruit trees — that can grow in these conditions. Again, the emphasis is very, very little light.

Apartment herb garden – indoor or porch?

I want to start a small container herb garden (basil, chives, oregano, cilantro & mint); I do have a porch but neither it nor my kitchen window get direct sunlight (they face North), though they do get plenty of indirect light.

Would it make a difference whether I choose to keep them on the windowsill or the porch?

Also, any hints/tips on growing herbs in containers? I live in Los Angeles, so snow is not a problem if I choose to grow on the porch, hehe.

Thanks!

Will my new solar Christmas light strand work on an indoor tree?

I just purchased these (in the spirit of "An Inconvenient Truth"!) and they do indeed work outside, where the solar box collects direct sunlight during the day. But will sunlight through window glass be enough to power the strand? I’d like to use indoors on a large ficus tree. Thanks for any help!

Would the sun work for as a coral light?

I know that when you have an aquarium with coral, you need a special light that is very expensive, but if I set up an aquarium in a outdoor fountain that has direct sunlight for about 8 hours a day, would that work just as well and keep them alive?

Why Haven't My Solar Powered Yard Lights Turned On?

My mother got me solar powered yard lights as an anniversary present. We stuck them in the ground last week and none of them have turned on. Not one! I would think it be odd if perhaps one didn’t turn on but none of them have. My yard gets direct sunlight throughout the day.

I am wondering if the wrapping paper she used to send them to me is the culprit. She used a special aluminum foil-like wrapping paper to wrap them in. I haven’t heard of tin foil ruining solar powered lights before but that is the only thing I can think of. I see no switches or buttons to press on the lights. My husband and I are just dumbfounded since we assumed that they would just automatically turn on after soaking up the sunlight for a day or two.

Help us solve this riddle!
