What are some youth focused organizations in Chicago that could benefit from a large-scale service project?

I am planning a fairly large-scale service day (Read: ~150-200 volunteers) around Thanksgiving time and I have been struggling to locate a service partner. I’m hoping to engage my volunteers in an afternoon of meaningful service that would benefit organizations that provide youth services. Examples of work we have done in the past includes: painting, landscaping, light construction, weatherproofing, etc.

Any suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated–it would be a great opportunity for you to highlight an organization you are familiar with that may be struggling or could just use some more help out this season!

Thanks in advance,
CPR

How to lower the voltage from 12VDC to 10VDC?

Hi guys,
I have a vehicle that puts out 12VDC to the license plate light. The circuit is fused with a 10AMP fuse. I would like to put a scrolling LCD sign in the window and I would like to connect it to the wiring of the license tail light however the scrolling LCD sign uses only 10VDC and 1amps is required for input. I will have to use a resistor to drop the voltage to 10v to the unit only. What size resistor do I need an how many watts? Many thanks in advance!!

Is it the heat that gives energy to solar panels or a something else?

I know that solar panels get there energy from the sun, but is it just from its heat? Many other things give off heat, like a heat lamp. I put a solar powered light i found up to a heat lamp for a minute and it had energy to produce light for a long time. I don’t know what else it could be, just want to know for sure.

Thanks in advance.
Oh — well in this case I’m talking about solar panels that produce electricity.

Do interior car LED lights need a toggle switch?

I am installing my interior car LED lights and I was wondering I they NEEDED a toggle switch? What would happen if I do not use a toggle switch? My guess is that the lights will turn on and off with the car. Could this be bad for the car? Will it blow the lights?

Thanks in advance!

Appropriate plastic thickness for outdoor covering?

If I wanted a light cover for something outside, what type of thickness of plastic sheeting would be good to have? It probably will not have to deal with weather, because it will be brought inside before rain, and it will not get wet. It will however be out in sunlight frequently. Is 4.5mil thick enough? Also, is black or clear better? is one more durable, does one deal better with the sun? is one cheaper? Thanks in advance.

Vivitar 285HV flashgun sink voltage?

I have a couple of Vivitar 285hv flash units which I normally use in addition to my main Canon ex580 speedlights as small background lights on location. I normally trigger these 285′s with Wein Peanut photo slaves.

Due to weilding & cutting equipment causing false flash triggering I want to trigger these another way. I dont have the time to buy the cheap pocket wizards you see on ebay to trigger these units wirelessly so thats not a solution.

I’d like to use a good old fashion sink lead I have to hand but am concerned about the trigger voltage being too high for my Canon D1s mark 3 or my back up 40D. I had heard the 285hv is a low trigger voltage safe for digital cameras but have no way of testing it myself.

Does anyone know what the trigger voltage is? is it safe with digital cameras? or is there any other solutions anyone can think of either to reduce the voltage, or trigger them another way?

Thanks in advance

What type of recessed lighting for a small kitchen?

Help! I have an electrician installing the recessed lighting, but I’m afraid it’s going to be the wrong type.

I want to use 4" lights, but what type of bulb should I go for? I don’t want it sticking out, and energy efficient is a plus. My kitchen is pretty small.

Please be specific: halogen, florescent, etc… and bulb size: mr16, r20, etc..

Thanks in advance.
